Unique Heavy Lift Project LyondellBasell at Maasvlakte

On the 4th of March 2019 SAL’s MV Regine discharged several heavy pieces destined for LyondellBasell at the Maasvlakte. LyondellBasell Covestro are investing over € 150 million in a Circular Steam Project where waste water will be turned into energy. On an annual basis the investment will reduce CO2 emissions with 140.000 metric tonnes (exhaust of 31.000 cars) and 0,9 Petajoules of energy (90.000 households). The cargo discharged consisted of an exhaust cooling system produced by Oschatz, the market leader in exhaust gas cooling systems, steam generation and recovery systems.

The most challenging units were two heavy weights of which the heaviest was 290 metric tonnes heavy and 35 meters long. Second heaviest was a 190 metric tonnes piece of 32,5 meters long. The two heavy pieces were discharged by SAL’s MV Regine’s ship’s gear and loaded directly onto Wagenborg SPMT’s. The other units were discharged with Rhenus own harbour mobile cranes and put to their place of rest with our own equipment terminal equipment.

The coming few weeks the machines will be stored at the Rhenus Deep Sea Terminal where Oschatz will prepare the machines before installing them 1 km down the road at the LyondellBasell plant. For this unique transport also the Wagenborg SPMT’s will be used to transport these voluminous cargoes. Special measures have to be taken in order to secure a save transport via the Antarcticaweg, all in close cooperation with the authorities.
